What is it to Defy Limits™ and Adventure Further®?
It's about building relationships and starting with the one most often overlooked: the relationship with ourselves. From there, as we build our relationships with others we will grow together and together we will build a brighter future.
Every day we are committed to developing quality relationships by building trust, respect, and communication with ourselves and each other.
We honor our KC Family culture by practicing these 13 fundamentals so that we Defy Limits and Adventure Further. With these we set the bar for ourselves and for our greater family. Leading by example we raise the bar for all whose lives you touch and hearts you inspire.
THE KC® FUNDAMENTALS
1. Always Ask Why
Never stop asking “Why”. If something doesn’t make sense don’t make assumptions and accept things at “face value”. Seek an understanding first by meeting everything with genuine curiosity, not judgment. Go to the source, gather the facts, and build the right story.
2. PRACTICE BLAMELESS PROBLEM-SOLVING
Apply your creativity and energy towards developing solutions, rather than pointing fingers and dwelling on problems. Identify lessons learned and use those lessons to improve so we don’t make the same mistakes again; fail forward.
3. OWN EVERYTHING YOU DO
You are as much an owner in this company as anyone. Be an active observer of what the needs of the people and company are. Be ready and willing to do anything and everything, collaboratively, to push the ball forward and then some.
4. HONOR YOUR COMMITMENTS
There’s no better way to earn people’s trust than to be true to your word. Do what you say you’re going to do when you say you’re going to do it. When you can’t, reset the expectations ahead so no one is surprised. This includes being on time for all meetings and commitments. Allow extra time for delays so they don’t become excuses.
5. CREATE LEGENDARY EXPERIENCES
Do the little things, as well as the big things, and blow people away. Create extraordinary experiences they’ll tell others about. Mere customer satisfaction is for lesser companies. Create loyalty by doing the unexpected.
6. BE OBSESSIVELY ORGANIZED & DETAILED ORIENTED
Regardless of the impact of your work if you can’t be accountable on multiple issues, tasks, or commitments, you won’t be a superstar. Use a task management system to prioritize and track your tasks. In parallel, focus on the quality of your work. From the spelling on a task to grammar in a document, the wording on a survey to the colors of a logo, details matters to us. Be a fanatic about double-checking your work. Get the details right.
7. LISTEN GENEROUSLY
Listening is more than simply “not speaking.” Listen to understand by quieting the noise in your head and let go of the need to agree or disagree. Hold space for team members to express themselves without judgment by listening with care and empathy.
8. ASSUME POSITIVE INTENT
Work from the assumption that people are good, fair, and honest. Give them the benefit that the intent behind their actions is positive. Set aside your own judgments and preconceived notions so that you can meet everything with curiosity first.
9. CHECK THE EGO AT THE DOOR
Our results are driven not by any single performer or accomplishment but by a collective effort of all departments working together. Always stay humble and meet challenges and ugliness with empathy and compassion.
10. BE HAPPY, NOT RIGHT
Drop the need to be right. Listen to each other and compromise while putting the focus on the solutions. Discover what they need and find a way to help them meet those needs first, then help them understand how to fulfill your own.
11. LAUGH EVERY DAY
Remember that there are bigger problems than the challenges we face. Life will always have highs and lows so always keep an even perspective in the moment. Work on not taking things personally, have fun, and be grateful.
12. CELEBRATE OUR SUCCESSES
Catching people doing things right is more effective than catching them doing things wrong. Regularly extend meaningful acknowledgment and appreciation – in all directions throughout our company.
13. DO THE RIGHT THING, ALWAYS
Demonstrate an unwavering commitment to doing the right thing in every decision you make and action you take. If you make a mistake, own up to it, apologize, and make it right. Always fail forward.
